FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Here are the answers to frequently asked questions about adopting a Rapscallion Maine Coon.
What's the difference between a standard and polydactyl (poly)?
Standards have standard feet; that is 4 toes and a dew claw on the front feet and 4 toes on the back feet.
Polydactyls (Polys) have additional toes on some or all feet. For more information about polys have a look at http://messybeast.com/poly-cats.html
How big will they grow?
A fully grown female's average weight range is 4 - 7 kg.
A fully grown male's average weight range is 5 - 9 kg.
Remember:
Big does not mean fat. There are no guarantees on how big a kitten will grow.A Maine Coon is not fully grown until 4 - 5 years of age.
How much grooming will be needed?
To remain tangle free you will need to comb them regularly. In summer once or twice a week combing should be enough. In winter and through early spring you will need to comb them every couple of days to keep them knot free. If they matt up badly a trip to the vet may be needed for a professional groom.
Don't forget to clip their claws regularly, particularly the polys. This will save your furniture and be much more comfortable for them too.
Will they get along with the other pets?
Maine Coons are generally happy to be friends with other pets. You just need to be sensible about introducing them to other family pets. Do not expect that they will be friends immediately, slowly introduce and supervise them until you are happy they won't hurt each other.
Are Maine Coons easy to train?
Yes, but the younger they are the easier it is.
Do Maine Coons have many health problems?
Maine Coons are a robust and generally healthy breed of cat; but there are genetic conditions associated with the breed. These include Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). All Rapscallion breeders have DNA tested clear for known conditions and copies of the parent results are supplied with purchased kittens. DNA testing is an indicator that they do not carry a gene known to be associated with HCM, but there could be other causes or genes which have not yet been identified. All Rapscallion Studs and Queens will have been heart scanned annually. A suitable for breeding scan result does not guarantee that the offspring will not develop HCM. All Studs and Queens are also hip scored by a veterinary radiologist.
Rapscallion Maine Coons is an FeLV / FIV free cattery with all breeders tested and returning clear results.
